Common Triggers for Dermatitis
A rash is an area of swollen or irritated skin. Rashes are typically itchy, painful, and appear red in appearance. Some rashes lead to blisters or raw skin being exposed. Typically, rashes are a symptom of another medical issue including allergic reactions from irritating substances. In addition, some genes can make individuals more prone to developing rashes.
Allergic contact dermatitis is a common type of rash that results when an allergic reaction occurs and the protective layer of the skin presents with an itchy rash. There are many common triggers for contact dermatitis, including:
- Poison ivy, poison sumac, and poison oak
- Tanning leather treated with chemicals
- Citrus fruit
- Latex rubber
- Fragrances found in cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, and lotions
- Skin medications
- Hair dyes
While contact dermatitis is a common form of rash, there are many reasons why a rash could be occurring. At Coast Dermatology and Laser Surgery Center we use allergy patch testing to help identify the specific offending agent causing the dermatitis. It is important to understand what type of rash you might have before administering treatment.
