Considering Dysport?
Many of our patients in Laguna Beach have researched different dermatology procedures for wrinkle relaxation and ways to decrease the appearance of fine lines. Over time, repeated movements of the facial skin by facial muscles form vertical wrinkle lines between the eyebrows, horizontal lines on the forehead, and lines around the eye. These lines are called “dynamic” because they disappear when the face stops moving. However, as an individual ages, the skin loses elasticity allowing for dynamic lines to become more permanent creases and wrinkles.
What is Dysport?
Dysport® is a neuromodulator used for wrinkle relaxation similar to Botox® Cosmetic. Neuromodulators treat and prevent dynamic wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing the muscles that control expression.
Once injected, Dysport blocks the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity. This treatment temporarily prevents the contraction of the muscle that causes wrinkles. As a result, new wrinkles cannot develop in that area, while existing creases soften.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?
While Botox and Dysport are similar treatments, they’re made with different formulas. Dysport is more diluted, so you may need more units to match the efficacy of Botox. A general rule of thumb is that 3 units of Dysport equals 1 unit of Botox. However, Dysport can treat larger areas than its predecessor and typically begins taking effect slightly faster. While Botox often starts working within 72 hours, Dysport can take effect in just 24 hours.
Dysport has also been found to be a good alternative for people who have developed Botox resistance over time. Results usually last three to six months, but may vary from patient to patient.
What does Dysport treat?
Dysport treats a wide range of dynamic facial wrinkles, including:
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Forehead lines
- Bunny lines (around the nose)
- Laugh lines (on the side of the mouth)
- Vertical lip lines
Much like Botox, Dysport can also be used to reshape the eyebrows and prevent the early signs of aging.
Who should consider Dysport treatments?
The best candidates for Dysport are healthy individuals with early signs of aging, such as fine lines and moderate wrinkles. Dysport has been shown to be most effective in men and women who have built up a tolerance to Botox. If you’re struggling with Botox resistance, Dysport treatments may improve your results.
What should I expect from the procedure?

Next, he will inject Dysport into the appropriate areas to soften your wrinkles. The entire procedure takes just 10-20 minutes.
Is there any downtime after treatment?
There’s no recovery time after Dysport injections. Once your treatment is finished, you can resume your normal activities. Minor bruising, pain, swelling, and redness at the injection site is expected, but these side effects should subside within 24-72 hours.
When will I see my results and how long will they last?
Dysport begins taking effect within 24 hours, but your best results should appear about 14 days after treatment. Similar to Botox, the effects of Dysport gradually fade about 3-6 months after treatment.
