Flaunt Your Injectable Results Longer: 5 Tips for Lasting Results

Many factors impact how long your injectables will last, including the specific product used and the dosage. However, your metabolic rate also plays a significant role. Your body will eventually break down the primary substance that relaxes or fills in those facial lines and wrinkles, and for some patients, this process will occur more quickly than others. But rather than spending your summer taking frequent trips to your doctor’s office for touch-ups, why not learn how to maximize your results and spend more time flaunting them?

With over 30 years of dermatology experience focusing on skincare health & beauty, our board-certified dermatologists at Coast Dermatology & Laser Surgery Center have helped patients in Laguna Beach, CA, and surrounding communities address their skincare needs. Dr. Glenn Goldberg provides a wide range of cosmetic dermatology services and specializes in Botox® and filler injections. Below, we share tips on how you can prolong your injectable results because we want you to focus on enjoying your enhanced appearance for as long as possible.

1. Your Filler Choice Makes a Difference

Each injectable is unique, with its own set of properties formulated to achieve different results. Depending on the injectable used, your body will reabsorb them at different rates. HA fillers such as Juvederm® and Restylane® can last 6-12 months, although certain products (like Juvederm Voluma) might last a bit longer. Location will impact an injectable lifespan too. Certain facial areas are more prone to aggressive movement and, in effect, cause injectables to wear off more quickly. The most active facial areas where filler is used are the mouth and lips. Many patients find they need to have these areas injected more often to maintain their positive results.

Similar to how fillers are each formulated differently, every patient will also have different skin concerns and aesthetic goals. The best way to determine which injectable is best for you is to consult with a board-certified dermatologist who specializes in them and has extensive experience with the range of currently available injectables. And with a trained aesthetic eye, they can help you achieve beautiful and natural-looking results.

2. Treat Your Skin Like Royalty

Just like many other cosmetic treatments, the benefits of injectables can be prolonged when you give your skin the proper care it needs.

Did you know that the sun’s UV rays can speed up the breakdown of your injectables and reverse their anti-aging benefits? Protect your skin consistently, especially post-treatment, by frequently applying high-quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen, avoiding the outdoors during peak UV hours, and wearing UV-protecting accessories such as sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats. By taking a proactive approach to skincare and using medical-grade skincare products, you can also give your results a boost. You can supercharge your skincare regimen by incorporating moisturizers with ultra-hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, which will dovetail the effects of the HA fillers. Other ingredients such as retinol and antioxidants will also help your skin’s surface remain plump and glowing.

What About Exercise?

Typically, dermatologists recommend their patients refrain from intense workouts for 1-3 days following an injectable treatment. This allows the fillers to settle, but you may resume your standard exercise regimen after that. Cosmetic treatments should never be an excuse to skip the healthy habit. More importantly, there is no scientific evidence suggesting that regular and even excessive exercise will affect an injectable dissolution.

3. Better Health = Longer Improvement

When you take care of your body, it will show on your skin. By keeping yourself hydrated, you not only keep lines and wrinkles at bay, but you also help extend the life of your injections. In the same way that you religiously hydrate your skin with topical treatments day and night, aim to be consistent with your eight glasses of water a day.

Your diet and nutrition will impact your skin’s health and appearance, too. To optimize your treatment results, you have to support your skin’s integrity by consuming a diet rich in whole foods packed with nutrients like vitamin C, omega-3 fatty acids, collagen, zinc, and B vitamins. Think berries, leafy greens, avocado, salmon, and nuts & seeds. Avoid inflammatory foods such as processed, high-sugar, and fried foods which promote cell damage and accelerate skin aging.

4. Stay on Schedule

It is better to maintain your results initially than start from scratch once your injectables are completely metabolized. Typically, follow-up sessions every 6-12 months are recommended, depending on the type of dermal filler used and the treatment areas. When you are proactive with your treatments, you will not only maintain your positive results, but you might also find you need less filler in subsequent sessions to achieve the same look.

5. Only Work with the Best

The best way to ensure optimal results between appointments is to work with skilled, experienced, and highly qualified providers. They have the knowledge, expertise, and aesthetic eye to customize dosing and ensure precise product placement to each patient, leading to longer-lasting results. More importantly, patients achieve beautiful, natural-looking improvement.
