Top Laguna Beach Dermatologist Reveals How to Have Healthy Skin Through Changing Weather

You’re lucky that you live in Laguna Beach, California, where we enjoy beautiful weather year-round. Nevertheless, we do have our seasons and those seasons change the way our skin looks and feels. At Coast Dermatology & Laser Center, our expert dermatologist, Dr. Glenn Goldberg, would like to share a few of his all-weather skincare tips with you, so your skin can weather the weather.

Skincare for warm seasons

You can probably guess the first recommendation for warm, sunny days: Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen. However, that rule-of-thumb holds true for cloudy, cool days, too. Any time you’re outdoors or near a window (and that includes while driving), you need to protect your skin with a high-quality sunscreen with an SPF of 30-50. The sun’s UVA and UVB rays are the #1 cause of skin cancer, which is on the rise. In fact, the Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that one in five Americans will have at least one case of skin cancer by the time they’re 70 years old. Cleanse and fortify

Because the sun robs your skin of moisture, aim for drenching your skin in hydration every chance you get. Try our Fortified Green Tea Cleanser, which cleanses excess oil and debris while bathing your skin in antioxidants, vitamins, and Co-Q10.

Exfoliate gently

Because exfoliation leaves your skin ever-more vulnerable to UVA and UVB damage, choose procedures that gently remove the upper layer of dead skin cells without making your skin overly sensitive. Switch from a strong chemical peel to a gentle peel, for instance, or space out your treatments to give your skin some resting time in between exfoliation treatments.

If you already have extreme sun damage, Dr. Goldberg and his team of board-certified dermatologists work to resolve it using exfoliation or laser treatments while keeping your skin safe. Some summertime aesthetic procedures include:

  • Ultimate Microdermabrasion — This treatment combines exfoliation with a therapeutic mask and relaxing massage.
  • Ultimate Pumpkin Enzyme Facial — Renew your skin with pumpkin enzymes. Treatment includes a deep cleaning, extractions (if necessary), and a hydrating mask to replenish moisture.
  • Deep Cleansing Back Treatment — Since you’ll be revealing more skin on the beach and elsewhere, be sure your skin looks healthy and glowing from all angles.
  • Light chemical peels — Choose from SkinMedica®, Glytone®, and PCA peels

We also recommend our take-home Glycolic Acid Facial Cream in case you aren’t able to make it to the office for an aesthetic service.

Use a light moisturizer

Moisturizer is a major component of basic daily skin care, and it plays an important role in maintaining skin health. Ask our team about non-comedogenic moisturizers that lock in hydration without blocking your pores. A great choice for daytime is our Ultra-Lite Moisturizer, fortified with Liposomal Antioxidants and Green Tea Extract.

Get misty

Carry a purse-sized bottle of mineral water spray wherever you go. Apply a spritz after cleansing and throughout the day to keep your skin fresh and hydrated.

Stock up on sunscreen (sorry, but we can’t say this too many times!)

Choose from our Advanced Anti-Photoaging Sunscreen Broad Spectrum – SPF 50+, which contains 6% micronized zinc for extra sun protection or our tinted BB cream with SPF 50+ UVA/UVB protection. Don’t forget to re-apply sunscreen every two hours or after sweating or swimming.

Skincare for cold(ish) seasons

During the colder months, you have to guard your skin against blustery winds outdoors and overly heated, dry air indoors. And though you still have to beware of the sun and use sunscreen daily, you can go deeper into your exfoliation and rejuvenation treatments, because you’re (probably) spending more time indoors.

Exfoliate even more

Though you still have to guard against the sun, wintertime is an ideal period for getting deep chemical peels that can remove years or even decades of skin damage. Monthly peels and facials help your skin get stronger just in time for summer.

Beef up your moisturizer

In the winter months, the air is dry both inside and outside, so you should wear a heavier moisturizer. Choose from our Fortified Moisturizer that contains squalane, dimethicone, and liposomal antioxidants. Now’s the right season for our Bio-Therapy Restorative Moisturizer night cream, which is fortified with ceramides, peptides, antioxidants, and hydrators.

And never forget the sunscreen!

Skincare for many, many seasons

You’ve seen more than a few turns of the season, and your skin has, too. While high-quality skincare is more important than ever as the years pass by, no cream or serum can fully rehydrate and rejuvenate aging skin. Start your skincare regimen off right by completely turning back the hands of time … so you can start with younger skin.

Frequent hand washing should be a part of your everyday routine, but it could dry out your hands, leading to premature aging. Using a mild antibacterial hand soap, scrub the fronts and backs of your hands for at least 20 seconds and get under your nails. Wash off the soap and be sure to apply a generous amount of our Intensive Hand Cream to keep the hands soft and smooth through the seasons.

At Coast Dermatology, we offer a variety of skin rejuvenation treatments that literally prompt your skin to create newer, fresher, healthier skin. You can say good-bye to:

  • Wrinkles
  • Sunspots
  • Sagging skin
  • Scarring
  • Unsightly facial veins
  • Enlarged pores

The dermatologists at Coast Dermatology can help you choose the right rejuvenation method for your skin type and issues. Options include:

Microneedling

With INFINI microneedling, radiofrequency energy is delivered through tiny needles that pierce your skin and initiate a wound-healing process that encourages collagen production, allowing your body to build new skin.

AFT Pulsed Light Therapy

The power of intense pulsed light (IPL) targets dark pigment in age spots and visible veins to break them up and clarify your skin. The heat from IPL also stimulates new collagen production in your skin, so that it becomes tighter, firmer, and healthier.

UltraPulse-Fractional CO2 Laser

In Dr. Goldberg’s hands, laser resurfacing is safe for all skin types and tones. Just one treatment erases wrinkles, dark spots, actinic keratosis, and scars. The laser’s heat forces your skin to rebuild itself with new collagen and elastin for a dramatic rejuvenation.

Be sure to avoid the sun and wear sunscreen of SPF 30-50 while your skin heals after an intense rejuvenation procedure. Starting rejuvenation therapies early can help keep stave off the signs of aging for decades to come.
